G-R teams take sixth at Spartan Early Bird Co-Ed

Brant earns gold in 400, high jump; Aneweer shot put champion

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls and boys track and field teams won their respective team titles at the Spartan Early Bird Co-Ed at Spartan Stadium on Tuesday, April 8.

The Grundy girls scored 172 points to finish ahead of Aplington-Parkersburg (124) and Hudson (119-1/2); Gladbrook-Reinbeck was sixth with 51 points. Grundy Center’s boys won with 144.5 points to Union’s 141 points, A-P was third with 133 points and G-R finished sixth with 53 points.

Individual winners for Grundy Center were Ava Heeren in the 100- and 200-meter dash events and Grace Storjohann in the 800-meter run. The Spartans also won four relays, Riah Schrage, Jocelyn Freed, Allison Koch and Heeren in the 4X100; Raelyn Steinmeyer, Maddy Hendershot, Karlee Lynch and Storjohann in the 4X400; Evelyn Geerdes, Lynch, Heeren and Storjohann in the sprint medley and the distance medley quartet of Gracyn Lynch, Koch, Karlee Lynch and Hendershot.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kennedy Brant was the 400-meter run champion as well as claiming gold in the high jump.

The Spartan boys won six events on Tuesday. Grant Newton and Brayden Wallis finished first in the 200 and 400, respectively; Newton was also part of the winning 4X100 along with Devin Hinders, Brody Zinkula and Thoren; Wallis was on the winning 4X400 with Aiden Hook, Zinkula and Brayden Davie. The 4X200 of Hinders, Zinkula, Newton and Davie were also winners, as was the shuttle hurdle team of Pete Lebo, Hinders, Ethan Meester and Tiernan Vokes.

Jace Aneweer was the lone champion for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys with a first-place showing in the shot put as well as a second-place finish in the discus.
