No. 11 Riceville runs past Rebels

The Class 1A No. 11 Riceville girls’ basketball team forced nine first-quarter turnovers to distance itself from Gladbrook-Reinbeck for good, beating the Rebels 59-36 in last week’s Valentine’s Day Region 1 quarterfinal.

Riceville (22-1), whose only loss was to 3A No. 9 Osage in the second game of the season, jumped out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter and kept Gladbrook-Reinbeck at bat the rest of the way. The Rebels (12-11) trailed by as many as 17 in the first half but closed to within nine during the fourth period.

Megan Cooley led G-R in her final game as a Rebel, as the senior post scored 13 points. Kennedy Brant added nine points and Emma McClintock made a pair of 3-pointers on her way to eight points. Lily Dripps (4) and Elly Sieh (2) rounded out the Rebels’ scoring.

Joy Beran scored a game-high 15 points to pace Riceville and Jaylyn Beran added 14 points. Tillotti Fair added 11 points, Madison Mauer had nine and Taylor Hemann eight as the Wildcats advanced to the regional semifinals.
