Diabetes support group and mindless eating class among November health education topics at GCMH

GRUNDY CENTER – The public is invited to take advantage of the health education classes offered by Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH) in November, including a new Diabetes Support Group. Designed for those living with Prediabetes or Type I or Type II Diabetes, the Support Group will begin on Monday evening, November 6th, 5:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. The support group is also open to family members and friends of those who have diabetes. The goal is to provide continued learning and skills development to help manage the disease. Registered Dietitians Wendy Brewer RDN, LD, and Crystal Petersen, RDN, LD, will facilitate the support group, which are free of charge and will meet quarterly on the first Monday of the month in November, February, May and August.

A CPR and First Aid class for the general public will be offered on Saturday, November 11, 8:30 a.m. 2:30 p.m. The class is for non-health care professionals, such as child care providers, and in addition to cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, includes use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Class size is limited, and there is a fee to cover materials.

Just What the Dr. Ordered Mindless Eating for Weight Loss is a free class on Monday, November 20, 5:30 7:00 p.m., for those who are seeking a sensible approach to maintaining a healthy weight. It has been said the best diet is the one you don’t know you are on, and everyday strategies to mindlessly and safely trim calories will be the basis for the free 90 minute class. Registered Dietitians Wendy Brewer RDN, LD, and Crystal Petersen, RDN, LD, base the research on the book Mindless Eating as they help class participants adopt a healthy approach to weight management.

The holiday favorite “Maintain, Don’t Gain” is back for a third year. If you’re looking for motivation to prevent weight gain during the upcoming holiday season, gather a group of friends or family members for this team effort that encourages team members to plan to avoid gaining weight during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Research shows that a typical weight gain of up to five pounds during the holiday season is often not lost but accumulates into a more significant and potentially unhealthy weight gain over the years.

Maintain, Don’t Gain begins with a team weigh-in during the week before Thanksgiving, November 16 22. Registrants will receive information to support healthy holiday eating, such as recipe makeovers, healthier ingredient swaps, and meal planning tips along with ideas for creating new family holiday traditions that don’t revolve around food. Teams will weigh out the first week of January, 2018, and those who maintain their starting weight or lost weight during the holiday season will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
