Ladies Night Out at GCMH supports breast cancer awareness

GRUNDY CENTER – In the fight against breast cancer, there are no better weapons than awareness and regular mammography screening. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Grundy County Memorial Hospital is offering both, with expanded hours for 3D mammography and a special Ladies Night Out event on Thursday evening, October 5, 5:00 8:00 p.m.

Area women are invited to stop by the hospital on Thursday evening for appetizers and desserts, a free chair massage, gift bag, and a sneak peek at the hospital’s comfortable and private new Imaging Suite and new 3D Mammography machine. The hospital is proud to offer the latest technology for early detection of breast cancer, Hologic Genius 3D mammography, which has been shown to increase the detection of advanced cancers by as much as 41 percent, and dramatically reduces the number of false positive breast screening exams. 3D mammography is able to “see through” tissue, making it possible to locate tumors that would otherwise be obscured on traditional 2D mammography. More information on the latest life-saving technology may be found at www.mygenius3d.com.

Current guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and the American College of Radiology recommend annual screening mammography for women beginning at age 40. Women at elevated risk for developing the disease, or who have previously been diagnosed with breast cancer should consult with their doctor about an appropriate screening schedule.

DEXA/bone density screening is also offered in the hospital’s new Imaging Suite. The non-invasive exam is a diagnostic tool used to measure bone loss, and assess a person’s risk for osteoporosis. Early detection of bone loss means treatment can be prescribed with a goal of preventing future fractures.

If it’s time for your mammogram or bone density screening, Grundy County Memorial Hospital has appointments available Monday through Friday. Phone GCMH Scheduling at 319-824-5081 to schedule an appointment for either screening exam.
