Weight loss challenge and other health education offered at local hospital

GRUNDY CENTER – If reaching your healthy weight is a goal for 2017, Grundy County Memorial Hospital is offering support. A new session of the 100 Day Weight Loss Challenge begins on Monday, January 23. The class features five classroom sessions with coaching by a registered dietitian-nutritionist, as well as weekly weigh-ins through May 2.

The five classes will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, January 23, February 13 and 27 and March 13 and 27 in the hospital Education Room. The class fee includes a free adult membership at the Grundy Family YMCA throughout the 100 days of class, as well as the chance to win a success rebate if you reach your healthy weight goal.

CPR and First Aid class for the general public will be offered on Tuesday, February 14, 4:30 9:30 p.m. The class is for non-health care professionals and in addition to cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, includes use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Safe Sitter is offered on Monday, February 20, 8:15 a.m. 4:00 p.m. for young teens who are just beginning to babysit for other children, care for a younger sibling, or stay home alone safely. The class includes preparation for emergency situations, food preparation tips and much more. Children must be eleven years old before the class date.

Just What the Dr. Ordered Nutrition for High Blood Pressure is a free class on Monday, February 20, 5:30 7:00 p.m., for those whose blood pressure is borderline or high. A registered dietitian-nutritionist will provide grocery shopping tips, meal preparation information, and other helpful ways to reduce salt and improve blood pressure.

A new session of the Diabetes Prevention Program begins in early February. Class meeting times will be scheduled once participants are registered. The program is for people who’ve been told they are pre-diabetic due to rising blood glucose numbers. The Diabetes Prevention Program is a series of classes and individual coaching that has demonstrated proven results in delaying or preventing the onset of Type II Diabetes. A doctor’s referral is not necessary to enroll in the course.
