Quitting smoking and avoiding diabetes are October education topics

Smokers who want to quit are encouraged to take advantage of the free Smoking Cessation class beginning this month at Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH). The hospital is offering the 8-session class on Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m., beginning on October 16th.

Smoking Cessation uses an American Lung Association approved curriculum and is taught by two GCMH nurses who are certified instructors. The course, which normally costs $150.00, is being offered free by the hospital for this session. Please contact Brenda Schmidt @ Brenda.Schmidt@unitypoint.org or 319-824-5085 to register for the class, as space is limited.

Also in October, a pre-diabetes class is being offered for people who have been told they have glucose levels that put them at a higher risk of developing diabetes. Dietitian Wendy Brewer RD LD will present positive lifestyle changes, meal planning tips, information about physical activity’s role in controlling blood sugar, and much more. Family members of people who have diabetes or have been told they are pre-diabetic are invited, also, to learn how to support healthy lifestyle changes.

Pre-Diabetes will be taught on Monday, October 20th, 5:30 p.m. A registration fee also includes your meal. For more information, contact Brewer at (319) 824-4127.

To register for either class, phone 319-824-5081 or enroll on the hospital website, www.grundycountyhospital.org.
