Herron leads Rebel rout of Clarksville to remain undefeated

Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior wide receiver Treyvon Herron (9) carries the ball during the Friday, Sept. 25, non-district win over Don Bosco in Gladbrook. Herron led both the Rebel offense and defense during last week’s rout of Clarksville. Following the Week 7 road victory over the Indians, Herron remained No. 1 in 8-Man for all purpose yards with 1,520 (No. 5 statewide). CLARKSVILLE – The perpetually underrated No. 6 Rebel bullet train routed No. 10 Clarksville last Friday night on the road, defeating the Indians 50-22 to remain undefeated at 7-0 and secure at least a share of the 8-Man District 6 title.

In the first quarter, senior phenom Treyvon Herron ran in a touchdown on the Rebels’ opening drive. His fellow wide receiver, junior Chad Gutknecht later found paydirt, too, scoring a 33-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Bennett Sieh. The Rebels ended the first quarter ahead, 14-0.

Herron scored again early in the second quarter after which Clarksville finally managed to get on the scoreboard with a touchdown from Boden Miller. Herron notched another rushing touchdown in response. Before the first half ended, Gutknecht ran in a 70-yard pick six to put the score at 36-8.

After the break, Clarksville quarterback Nathan Moon ran in a touchdown after what seemed like the longest series in The Pit’s history. On the next drive, Herron recorded his fourth rushing touchdown of the evening with a 49-yard run on the first play.

In the fourth quarter, the Indians scored once. For the Rebels’ final act, Herron took the toss from Sieh but rather than run in what would have been his fifth rushing TD that night, he threw long to G-R sophomore wide receiver Laken Thesing who ran in the 46-yard reception for the 50-22 Rebel victory.

Herron led the G-R offense with 15 carries for 140 yards and four scores plus the 46-yard passing touchdown to Thesing. Sieh was 6-of-7 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown. Sieh also had two carries for 20 yards and recorded the Rebels’ lone 2-point conversion.

The Rebel defense smoked craggy Clarksville despite its imposing offensive line boasting players well over 200 pounds. Of G-R’s 74 tackles, Herron led with 15 (eight solo), while senior Brayden Utter had a dozen. Junior Kooper Larsen contributed 11 tackles, senior Cole Gramer 9.5, Gutknecht 8, junior Mason Heise 6.5, senior Joshua Utterback 6, and junior Devin Boldt 5.5.

Clarksville was limited to 20 passing yards, but rushed for 303 yards with most of that attributed to Moon in the second half. Their defense only managed to lay down 21 tackles on the wildfire Rebels. Clarksville moved to 5-2 (4-1) following the game.

The Rebels (7-0, 5-0) have the potential to capture the district championship during tonight’s clash with North Tama (5-2, 4-1) at “The Pit” in Gladbrook. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Parents Night will be celebrated at halftime.
