GARWIN – GMG triumphed on the gridiron for the second time this season, decisively defeating Calamus-Wheatland, 40-22, here last Friday, Aug. 28, in Week 1 non-district 8-Man action after notching a Week Zero win over Belle Plaine.

The Wolverines led Calamus-Wheatland 12-10 following the first quarter, but were outscored 12-8 in the second quarter with the Warriors leading 22-20 heading into the break.

GMG roared back in the third quarter, scoring 14 unanswered points before adding another touchdown for good measure in the final – earning a second straight win to remain undefeated heading into district play.

Calamus-Wheatland starting quarterback Blake Trenkamp threw for 65 yards and two touchdowns against the Wolverines; he was intercepted once. Backup Cole Green added 22 passing yards. The Warriors rushed for 184 yards total with Brennen Koch carrying in one touchdown. The Warriors also recorded 33 total tackles and three sacks.

GMG (2-0) will face Clarksville (0-1) tonight, Friday, Sept. 4, on the road to open District 6 play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Clarksville fell 53-32 to non-district Edgewood-Colesburg last week.

The Wolverines have not won two games in a season, let alone three, since 2021, when they notched wins over Grand View Christian (Week 1) and then Collins-Maxwell (Week 2) before later recording a third win over Meskwaki to end the season 3-5.

GMG’s last winning season was a 7-3 year in 2005.
