G-R baseball goes 1-1 at BGM Tournament

BROOKLYN — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team won its way into the championship game of the BGM Tournament before falling to Highland on Saturday, June 7, at BGM High School.
The Rebels (3-6) defeated Grand View Christian, 5-4, to advance to the championship. G-R scored four times in the third inning to answer the Thunder’s three-spot in the top half, and the Rebels broke a 4-all tie with its run in the bottom of the fourth.
Trevor Mathern and Austen Mathern combined to pitch three innings of scoreless relief to preserve the lead, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Chad Gutknecht earned the win for his four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and one hit batter. He struck out one.
G-R managed just four hits — all singles — but capitalized on nine walks and five hit-by-pitches. Cole Gramer was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Michael Boyd was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Gutknecht walked three times and scored twice.
Highland edged the Rebels in the title game, 2-1. The Huskies (5-2) scored the tie-breaking run in the top of the sixth.
G-R got just two hits in the finale, with Austen Mathern and Gutknecht both getting singles. Trevor Mathern scored the team’s only run.
Treyvon Herron took the hard-luck loss for the Rebels, allowing six hits, one walk and two hit batters while striking out five.
