Grow A Row for Tama County returns in 2026

Food insecurity remains significant challenge for many residents

TAMA COUNTY – Tama County Master Gardeners and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Tama County invite farmers and gardeners to once again “Grow A Row for Tama County–Backyard Gardeners Fighting Hunger” in 2026. Now entering its sixth year, the campaign encourages residents to plant and share extra produce to support local food pantries and improve access to fresh, nutritious vegetables for Tama County families.

Since the program began in 2020, volunteers and community gardeners have steadily increased their impact. In 2025, more than 2,000 pounds of fresh produce were donated, marking the program’s largest annual contribution to date. This milestone reflects a long-term community goal achieved through consistent participation and generosity.

Food insecurity remains a significant challenge in Tama County. According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, 2,300 residents–13.5% of the county’s population–experience food insecurity, with an average meal cost of $3.43 and an annual countywide food budget shortfall of $1.49 million. These figures underscore the continued need for fresh, locally grown produce in area food pantries.

“As farmers and gardeners begin planning their 2026 gardens, this is the perfect time to commit to growing a little extra to share,” Cheryl Bruene, Executive Director and Master Gardener Coordinator for ISU Extension and Outreach in Tama County, said. “Our community exceeded 2,000 pounds last year. With your help, we hope to grow – and give – even more in 2026.”

Whether you are an experienced grower or planting your first garden, residents are encouraged to participate.

The Tama County Master Gardeners will again coordinate produce collection and distribution. All donated produce should be delivered to the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Toledo on Mondays before noon, where it will be weighed, recorded, and packaged for delivery to local food pantries. Recipes and other information specific to each item will be included in the packages delivered to the pantries.

Anyone interested in participating in Grow A Row for Tama County is invited to call or visit the Tama County Extension office during business hours.
