Former G-R superintendent one of three finalists for Waverly-Shell Rock vacancy

David Hill

TRAER – The Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District recently announced three finalists in its search for the district’s next superintendent including former Gladbrook-Reinbeck superintendent David Hill.

Other finalists include East Marshall Community School District Superintendent Anthony Ryan and Tipton Community School District Superintendent Jason Wester.

This past Monday, Wester removed himself from the pool after accepting a position as superintendent at West Burlington Independent School District.

Superintendent Hill was hired as North Tama’s superintendent in 2015. From 2016-2020, he was also superintendent of neighboring Gladbrook-Reinbeck under a sharing agreement.

Hill, 50, was a finalist in 2022 for the Union Community School District’s superintendent vacancy where he once worked as a principal.

According to a Waverly-Shell Rock news release, Hill has helped improve North Tama’s financial position while adding programming and new student opportunities, in addition to leading a successful bond referendum election with 65% supermajority voter approval.

The Waverly-Shell Rock district spans three counties including Bremer, Butler and Black Hawk. Last school year the district had a total served enrollment of roughly 2,278 students. The district campus includes a high school, an alternative school, a middle school, and four elementary schools.

On Thursday of this week (Feb. 1), the Waverly-Shell Rock school board and stakeholder interview teams were scheduled to conduct final interviews with each of the three finalists including Hill. Following the interviews, the board planned to discuss the candidates before making a final decision soon thereafter.

This story will be updated online as more information is released.

The next Waverly-Shell Rock superintendent will begin leading the district effective July 1, 2024.
