MASON CITY — For the second consecutive day, the NIACC men’s golf team won a team title. Behind Kevin Trobaugh’s medalist round of 73, NIACC won its own invitational by four strokes over Iowa Lakes, shooting a 311 at Mason City Country Club on Monday. “Winning two consecutive tournaments feels great, especially against good competition,” Trobaugh said. Trobaugh, whose previous best round at NIACC was a 75, finished two shots ahead of Iowa Lake’s Harley Snelson, who finished with a 38-37. “Kevin Trobaugh was outstanding,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “He’s been playing great golf lately and to go 34-39 in windy conditions on a tough golf course, I’m very pleased with how he played.” Trobaugh recorded a 2-under 34 on the front nine and missed opportunities for a similar score on the back nine. “I was very happy with my front nine and was able to drop a few putts,” Trobaugh said. “I hit the ball in the water on No. 11 but I kept my round together. I was proud of the way I was able to strike the ball, hitting seven straight greens on the back.” However, Trobaugh knows he left a few shots out on the course. “I hit some really nice iron shots but just wasn’t able to make any of my putts,” Trobaugh said. Logan Jarvis and Joe Myers added rounds of 79 while Levi Fink — the Trojans’ No. 1 golfer rounded out the NIACC scoring with an 80. “Our No. 1 guy didn’t have his best day but he had to feel good knowing that he had teammates that picked him up,” said Frenz, who also received an 83 from Travis Youngblut — including a 1-over 37 on the front nine. “All of them played great.” While NIACC saw consistency from its five golfers, a pair of former preps from the area — Iowa Lakes’ Joe Dakken (Forest City) and Iowa Central’s Cody Brandau (Mason City) — shot rounds of 82 and 83, respectively. “They’re great kids,” Frenz said. “I tried to recruit both of them to come to NIACC. It was just circumstances that they went somewhere else. It was nice to see both of them back in North Iowa. While it’s fun to see those guys, it feels even better to beat them.”
