G-R Cross Country By: Coach Andy McQuillen-Benton Community Invite

Gladbrook-Reinbeck's Meg Edler

Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School has been celebrating Homecoming this past week. Amid the heat and erly dismissals, the cross country team has been attempting to practice and gain some ground in the early season. While this has been challenging at times, the Rebels have endured. The Grinnell Meet scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled due to the heat, so the only meet of the week was Benton Community. The Rebels quickly found the competition at Benton to be tough. Several traditional cross country powers were present and flexed thier muscles early and often. The Rebels struggled against a bigger schools and their larger numbers. But we were able to experience a state caliber meet. Tyler Bovy held his own in the varsity boys run, with a time of 18:41 (27th overall), and had the best finish for both squads. The middle school runners also had an opportunity to run at Benton. Max Schweppe finished 6th overall in the boys race. Lily Ehlers was 32nd overall in the girls race. This group really competed well for a relatively young group of runners. Like the high school group, they will improve from meet to meet. We will rebound from this experience. One big posititve was that all of the times improved from the South Hardin Meet. Another positive was the performance by the middle school runners. As a group, we realized we have to get back to work, move forward, and get ready for the BCLUW Meet.
