Child Development

By: Sadie Brockett The students in Miss Rowe’s Child Development Class recently did a project where each student took a turn taking care of an electronic model baby. These babies were programmed to cry when they were hungry, needed to be burped, needed their diaper changed, or just needed to be held. Senior Leah Holman thought these babies cried more than a baby would on a good day, but it wouldn’t be too far off on other days. She also said it helped her develop an appreciation for girls who are pregnant in high school and moms in general. Sadie Cahalan, a sophomore, experienced waking up in the night when her baby cried. She enjoyed taking care of the baby, except when it cried in the night. After they took care of their babies, the students each wrote a report focusing on the realistic and unrealistic things they did while taking care of their babies. This project gave them a better understanding of babies’ sleeping and eating patterns and other challenges teen parents might face. Sophomore Walker Thede thought this project replicated the experience of taking care of an actual baby well, and it was beneficial to showing what a huge responsibility babies are. Next year, Miss Rowe plans on adding a financial side to this project to teach about the costs of taking care of a child.
