G-R Student draws Heart By: Kelly Brockett

Emily Johnson, a senior at G-R High School, has had a very unique opportunity to showcase her artistic talents to help a cardiologist at Covenant Medical Center. When Johnson was a sophomore in biology classes, Mr. Boheman assigned a project in which the students would work in partners to draw and label the entire human skeleton. Emily did the majority of the drawing and the results were impressive. The following year, while Johnson was in anatomy class, Dr. P., a cardiologist at Covenant, came and dissected a pig heart for the class. In discussion, Johnson’s knack for drawing came up. Dr. P said that he’d always wanted someone to draw him a big heart diagram to show his patients – especially the older ones whose eyesight isn’t what it once was – what was going on in their heart and procedures would involve. Dr. P. enlisted Emily for this task. She worked very hard on it and finished it this September. He liked it so much that he asked her to draw the outside of the heart for him as well. She’s also received a request to do a drawing for a physical therapy office. Johnson is overjoyed. “It’s just crazy that this is what I want to do with my life, and it’s happening now.”
