Children’s Theatre Camp returns this summer

TOLEDO – “The School for Spies” is coming to The Wieting Theatre in Toledo. This musical is designed for students of all levels of theater experience. Campers will audition, rehearse, and perform a musical alongside three professional teaching artists… in one week.

“The School for Spies” is a brand-new production with script by Katie Colletta and music by Jason Sifford. It’s a new year at the School for Spies, an elite training program for spy recruits, run by the Global Intelligence Agency. But when the powerful Moon Cube goes missing under the GIA’s watch, the school is thrown into turmoil. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to join a world of secret agents and espionage to crack the case.

The camp is open to 50 students entering second grade and up. Camp will be held July 15-19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with the final performance on Friday, July 19, at 7 p.m. The cost is $85 per student which includes a camp photo and t-shirt. This is a great opportunity for students to learn theater skills and perform for their families and friends. Some of the skills learned are being comfortable in front of a crowd, vocal projection, stage directions and technical aspects of theater. Performers learn how to cooperate and work as a team to put on a musical in one week while having fun.

After this experience students usually fall into one of the three groups. The first group discover that musical theater is probably not for them. The second enjoyed the experience and will try out for plays in high school and support the arts in their community as adults. The final group feels that acting is in their blood and will pursue some form of it as a career. Many of our current thespians began with the Wieting’s Children’s Theatre Camp experience.

Registration forms will be distributed at Tama and Toledo libraries and at the Wieting Theatre. Also, you can locate the form at wieting.tamatoledo.com, click on the ‘About’ tab and under summer camps a printable version is available.

Only one question remains: Will you join the secret agents to crack the case of the missing Moon Cube?
