30 yrs. ago Jan. 26, 1990 On Jan. 2, Gladbrook city officials received a check for $3,931.11 from Dave Ubben. The money comes back to the city as part of a record dividend, nearly $2 million, earned by Gladbrook and other cities participating in an insurance program. Cities earned the dividend by keeping loses well below insurance industry projections for the state. Shady’s Ladies celebrated 20 years of card playing, fun and fellowship, with a carry-in luncheon. Ten were present that were at the first card party, they were Linda Luethje, Thelma Osborn, Vivian Schade, Hattie Thompson, Elsie Paustian, Elsie Groth, Norma Sass, Gladys Boldt, Iva Lorenz, and Judy Wendel. Bonnie and Bob Fairchild of Gladbrook became the parents of their first child, Kylee Marie, born January 18. She weighed 9 lbs. 9 oz. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Verle Luethje, Garwin and paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fairchild, Traer. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd F. Cutler, Garwin, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Jan. 14. 40 yrs. ago Feb. 1, 1980 The Garwin Drama and Speech Club really does have something to be proud about, last weekend they returned from the district large group contest with three Division 1 ratings and three Division 2 ratings. Division 1 groups will go onto the State Large Group contest. Gladbrook’s Centennial Celebration is July 17-18-19-20, 1980. Mr. and Mrs. Claus Hein of Gladbrook will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Freida Engel and Claus Hein were married Feb. 12, 1930 in Dysart, Iowa. 50 yrs. ago Jan. 23, 1970 Last Friday night the Gladbrook Pantherettes lost to Wellsburg 55-42. The contest was decided in the first quarter as they could only manage to find the basket one time out of ten attempted. Marsha Kroeger came up with another fine game in the guard court with 16 rebounds and six stolen passes. Norman G. Lage , 67, long time resident of Lincoln was found dead in the yard at his home in Lincoln last Saturday afternoon, where he had frozen to death. Mr. Lage was born August 26, 1902, in Lincoln Township, Tama county, the son of Gustave C. and Matilda Jacobs Lage. Thursday was the first day since last Saturday that the mercury rose above zero. Lowest reading -26. Miss Terri Goos, daughter of the Evan Goos’, Gladbrook, received her BA Degree with Teaching Certificate in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Northern Iowa on January 21. She will start her teaching career at Menlo Community School. Michael Landt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Landt of Gladbrook, recently received the Navy Achievement Medal. 60 yrs. ago Jan. 22, 1960 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Storjohann of Gladbrook will observe their golden wedding anniversay. Alvena Landt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Landt of Garwin was married to Henry Storjohann at Marshalltown, Feb. 7, 1910. Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. Harry Groth, 46, who died Saturday at University Hospital in Iowa City, where she had been a patient since Dec. 26. Alverta Margaret Wiese Groth, daughter of Emil and Hilda Peters Wiese, was born Nov. 11, 1913 in Grant township, Tama County. She married Harry Groth on Jan. 13, 1934. Mr. and Mrs. Karl N. Hansen will observe their 25th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Hansen were married at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Schroeder on Feb. 13, 1935. Ruth Boland, daughter of Carl Eilers, suffered a stroke at her home in California on January 13th, leaving her in a paralyzed condition. Carl Eilers and her sister, Mrs. Allen Medberry, left Tuesday to be by her side. Gladbrook, Dysart, Chelsea, and Montour moved into the semi-finals of the Tama Co. Boys Basketball Tournament being held this week in the Gladbrook gym. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Perrin, Lincoln, became the parents of a son born Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hauser are the parents of a son born Sunday. Carolyn Moffet, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Luther Moffet, Gladbrook, is the spring bride-elect of Pvt. Robert H. Burrell. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Shirk of Garwin last Saturday. 70 yrs. ago Jan. 20, 1950 Twenty members of the Class of 1963 reported to school for the first time Monday morning when kindergarten started here. Sober, quiet, and maybe a little frightened, they were happy when playtime came. Morning class: Marilyn Koster, Douglas Gethmann, Nancy Gethmann, Gerald Jessen, Douglas Koster, Burnell Grimmius, Thomas Street, Mary Oaks, and Bonnie Ladehoff. Afternoon class: Jimmy Morgan, Carol Lee Clarksen, Myrna Clar, Kenneth Fink, Sandra Wiese. Not present on the first day: Donna Kneeland, Mark McKinney, and Margery Mussig. Mrs. Gertrude Bartling is their instructor. Mrs. Ed Baurle died suddenly at her home in Gladbrook Monday evening as a result of a heart attack. Mrs. Baurle suffered a slight attack Monday morning and another at 5 p.m. She died at 5:15 p.m. Mrs. Theresa Grace Baurle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Delfs, was born in Crystal township, Tama County, Iowa on September 11, 1889. On Feb. 15, 1915, she was united in marriage with Ed Baurle, three children were born to this union, Pauline, Wilma, and Merwin. Marie Soderberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. U.E. Soderberg, Green Mountain, became the bride of Calvin Ohrt, of Garwin, Sunday afternoon in Green Mountain. “I’ll pay an extra quarter to see two games like that!” That’s what one basketball fan said Tuesday night after seeing Bob Boston swish through a long shot in the “sudden death” overtime to let the Gladbrook boys squeeze past Conrad 32-30. Just before that fan lost his hair and chewed off his fingernails while Conrad girls rallied in the second half to earn a one-point victory 21-20. The Gladbrook Panthers will enter the Tama County Basketball Tournament at Dysart next week as a “dark horse” contender. The boys open against the Toledo Juvenile Home. From the Purple and Gold – “Trash Can” I guess the seniors really like the freshmen – or is it vice-versa? We don’t know which it is, but we do know Herbert O. and Gayle A. and Allan T. and Patricia W. were together Friday night at Marshalltown. One of our brunette senior girls seemed to enjoy last Tuesday night with Bob F. We thought you were going steady with Phyllis K. !! Also standing in line were Elaine D. and Harold H. 80 yrs. ago Jan. 26, 1940 The Community Woman’s Club is sponsoring a benefit party Wednesday, January 31, at the American Legion Hall, for the express purpose of raising money to help swell the library fund. Bridge, Bingo, Chinese Checkers, and 500 will be played. The weather was cold last Tuesday evening, but the Gladbrook high School basketball team was hot enough to eke out a 26-24 victory over Grundy Center. The Gladbrook City Council has met several times recently and compiled and passed a Milk Ordinance for the protection of persons using milk products from various herds. The ordinance applies to skimmed milk, sour milk, buttermilk, cream, sour cream, and milk beverages and in regard to their sale. It provides for the inspection of milk and cream and the establishment and enforcement of sanitary requirements for the production and distribution and handling and fro the tuberculin and Brucella tests of all individual cows or herds supplying milk. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hansen are the parents of a baby boy born Friday at the Dr. Marling home. A group of 50 relatives and friends gathered Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fink, east of town, in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary. Cards and Chinese Checkers were played and at a late hour refreshments were served. While enroute to school Miss Cooper who teaches at No. 1 froze one of her hands. 90 yrs. ago Jan. 24, 1930 The 121 rural school teachers of Tama County are drawing salaries averaging $84.16 per month county records show. This is a raise in the average for 1928-29, which was only $83.77. The wages paid teachers vary considerably in different districts, the report shows, ranging from $65 to $100. The majority, however, lie between $75 and $89. There are six rural teachers who draw $100 per month, the highest pay. They are Irma Pifer, Gladbrook; Gertrude Duffy, Tama; Vernetta Spiers, Gladbrook; Doris Ferry, Toledo; Ruth Stark, Traer; and Marie Heckroth, Dysart. Fire discovered at 6:30 a.m. Saturday caused by an explosion of an oil stove, totally destroyed two frame buildings occupied by Houlk Grocery and J. J. Mulder Barbershop in the business section of Reinbeck, with losses estimated at $14,200.00. Basketball enthusiasts will be permitted to see the stars of yesterday represented by Burke, Sebberts, Hoppe, Poland, Rohweder, Rehder and several others mix with the present high school stars to decide local supremacy. The alumni girls will be represented by the Engel sisters, Lundt, and Thede in their game with the high school girls. Rev. H. Specht, of St. Louis, who was pastor of the local Evangelical church from 1903-1909, has again accepted a call from this church and will soon be here to take up the work.
