30 Years Ago June 9, 1989 A crew from the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad Line are pulling up the rails of the abandoned railroad line behind the Farm Service plant. To many it will seem very odd not having a train running through Gladbrook after 100 years of rail service. Wedding vows were exchanged between Elizabeth Schaeferle and First Lt. Mark Dufton, May 26. Parents of the bride are Major and Mrs. Mark Blaine Schaeferle of Fallbrook, California. Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. William Dufton, Methuen, Massachusetts. An August 12th wedding is being planned for the approaching marriage of Pam Hamann to Ken Fogt. Parents of the couple are Duane and Susan Hamann of Gladbrook and Jack and Joan Fogt of Reinbeck. Chris Gienger, daughter of Allen and Janell Gienger of rural Gladbrook will compete for District 7 pork Queen on Saturday, June 17, at the Tama Civic Center. Courtney Millard, with a little help from dad, Rex, landed a 12 1/4 pound 29″ long channel catfish on Sunday. 40 Years Ago June 15, 1979 Five Gladbrook students bound for Seefeld, Austria leave Monday from Des Moines, stopping in Munich, Germany first. In Austria they will take part in the International Music Festival as part of the Central Iowa Wind Orchestra. The five are John Bruene, Dave Anker, Lynnette Bearden, Karen Jindrich and Jayne Dahms. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Landon of Marshalltown are the parents of a son born June 7. He was named Stephen Alexander and joins brother Matthew, 21 months at home. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James Gilchrist and Mr. and Mrs. Max Landon. Mrs. Helga Dreessen is the great grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Swartz, Marshalltown, are the parents of a daughter born June 6. She has been named Jonie Linn. She has a brother, Aaron, 2 1/2 years old at home. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Don Hauber, Evansdale. Paternal grandmother is Mrs. Wilbur Luethje, Gladbrook. William Swartz, Beaman, is the paternal grandfather. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pippert, Gladbrook, are the parents of a daughter born June 6. She has been named Mary Ann. She has a brother, Ryan, 3 1/2 years old. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Loren Luethje and James Pippert. Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Wegner are the parents of a baby girl born May 29. She has been named Heather Marie. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Russell Faircloth of State Center and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wegner of Toledo. Marcy Knaack received the Iowa State Jaycettes highest honor, the Patsy Dunham Award, on Saturday, June 9 as Gladbrook hosted the State Planning Session. 50 Years Ago June 6, 1969 Dr. Dennis Brubaker of Grundy Center has purchased the late Dr. H. D. Kehoe dental practice in Gladbrook. Airman Paul M. Koester, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. Koester, Gladbrook, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Sams celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on May 27. John Hooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Hooper of rural Gladbrook, was selected by the Ehrig-McTurk Legion Post to represent Gladbrook at Boys State which is being held at Camp Dodge. Dotta Harders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Harders of Lincoln, and Charles Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barnes of Grundy Center, were united in marriage on May 31st. Linda Mehaffy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Mehaffy, a student at the Gladbrook community school has been chosen by Ehrig-McTurk Unit 127 of Gladbrook to attend Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. 60 Years Ago June 5, 1959 Gloria Elvina Gutzler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gutzler of Des Moines, became the bride of Leon Lloyd Wrage. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Wrage of Gladbrook. Judith Sherman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sherman, became the bride of Leon Schulz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Schulz. Miss Barbara Sievers and Leonard R. Vogt exchanged wedding vows on May 17. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sievers of Gladbrook and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Vogt, Reinbeck. 70 Years Ago June 3, 1949 George Gensen, 14, son of Don Gensen, Tama, was drown Wednesday when he fell from a diving board from which he was fishing in Cherry Lake west of Tama. The diving board was suspended from a tree. New telephone directories, scheduled for delivery the forepart of July, will contain the names of all those living in Gladbrook, Garwin and Lincoln communities. Mrs. Bernice King recently announced the approaching marriage of her daughter, Shirley Joyce. Miss King will marry Wayne V. Paustian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Paustian on June 11. Mr. and Mrs. George Gethmann, who farm south of Beaman, are the parents of a son born Tuesday. This is their third child. 80 Years Ago June 2, 1939 Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Wentzien, of Tama, are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday. The little Miss was delivered by Caesarian operation. Spotted Fever claims its first victim on the Sac-Fox Reservation. Mrs. Frank Eagle, 30, passed away Tuesday of the disease in the Indian general hospital. Miss Opal Knox, of Earlham, will succeed Miss Durkes as principal of the high school next year. Herbert l. Allard, 58, for 30 years as a resident and active business man, passed away suddenly at his home in Northridge, California. 90 Years Ago June 6, 1929 Mrs. George M. Swart, 75, passed away at her home in this city early Saturday morning. Mrs. Charles Bruene lies ill at her home in Gladbrook with double pneumonia. Mrs. Bruene is 73 years old. Monday forenoon the fire truck was rushed to the farm known as the G. C. Greve farm three miles southeast of Gladbrook to extinguish a blaze in the roof of the kitchen, which started around the stove pipe. Lincoln lost one of its early settlers Saturday when Carsten H. Brahms, 78, passed away. He was engaged in business in Lincoln, when it was better known as Berlin and is known by everyone in northwest Tama county. E. W. Brauch, who has suffered a nervous affliction for the past few weeks, was taken to Des Moines Friday where he was placed in the Hill’s Retreat sanitarium for treatment Carl Wieland and attorney Kliebenstein.
