30 Years Ago May 19, 1989 Commencement for the 70 Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School graduates will be Sunday, May 21, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School gymnasium. Sunday, May 21, at 4:00 p.m. at the GMG High School, Seniors will participate in Commencement Exercises at the Garwin High School. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Cooper of Grundy Center,are the proud parents of their first child, a girl. She arrived on May 2. She has been named Cassandra Kae. Maternal grandparents are Wayne Peterson of Lincoln and Mary Lou Peterson of Grundy Center. Paternal grandparents are Dennis and Bette Cooper of Grundy Center. 40 years Ago May 25, 1979 Gladbrook Centennial Collector’s Plate are now available for advance orders. Mrs. Christine A. Rose, 94, passed away Tuesday at the Westbrook Acres Nursing Home. Kim Halverson will graduate from the Marshalltown Community School of Nursing on Friday, May 25. North Tama School Superintendent, Donald Lenth, reported Monday that a school bus was taken from the Clutier attendance center. The report was investigated by Tama County Deputy Mike Richardson. The 1968 school bus with the number one on it was taken sometime Thursday night or Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Randy Welton became the parents of a baby girl on May 15. She has been named Lindsey Sue. She was greeted home by two sisters, Andrea and Stephanie. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert Storjohann and Mr. and Mrs. June Welton. 50 Years Ago May 16, 1969 Mrs. Etta Shope will retire on July 1, 1969, as secretary to the Board of Education of the Gladbrook Community School District. Mrs. Shope has held this position since December 1951-a total of 17 1/2 years. I. H. Wentzien, Gladbrook, has been named as one of the most prominent Republicans whose name will be included on the Republican Memorial that has been placed at the Gettysburg Memorial site. Forty-eight of the GHS Seniors of 1969 will leave May 20 for a 4-day senior trip which will climax with a tour of Mackinac island on the northern tip of Michigan. Miss Janet Lee McGowan became the bride of Joel Gordon Brekke on May 3. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McGowan of Gladbrook and the bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Pearl Brekke and the late Orville M. Brekke Sr. of Union. 60 Years Ago May 15, 1959 Two new businesses will soon open in Gladbrook-a new Gamble Store and a Launderama. A third new business, Sunnyside Cafe, opened this week in the Mohr building, under the management of Harold E. Monk. Thirty-three seniors of the Gladbrook High School will graduate. Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Ploog, of Lincoln, are announcing the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Pauline, and Robert A. Johannsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Johannsen. 70 Years Ago May 13, 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dierks are the parents of a son born to them on Sunday. He has been named Steven Craig. They have two other children, James and Sandra. Mr. and Mrs. C. Robert Johnson are the parents of a son born Sunday. This is their second child and he has been named David Charles. Mrs. Dean Vint and son, Michael Dean, returned home from the hospital Tuesday. This is the Vint’s first child. Mrs. Vint is the former Melva Rohweder. 80 Years Ago May 12, 1939 Tama County Attorney, George H. Struble, Wednesday morning of last week, filed county attorney’s information in district court charging Dr. William C. Wagner, of Traer, and Dr. Paul F. Marling, of Gladbrook, with illegal sale of narcotics to Eugene Jenkins, Grinnell, motion picture machine operator. The two men were placed under arrest by Deputy Sheriff Russell Kern. Roger Dreessen, the 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Dreessen, who live southwest of Gladbrook, was severely injured Saturday morning when his pet chow dog bit him on the chin. It required eight inches to close the ugly wound. Miss Marjorie Bannister has been the new teacher selected to teach Home Economics and Commercial in the Gladbrook School. The Wentzien Hardware Store at Lincoln was robbed Monday night of this week. The thieves helped them selves to a number of guns, two radios, and electric toaster, shells and several small items and about $20 in cash which was in the cash register. The thieves used a bar and entered through a side window. The only clues left behind were some fingerprints. Mark Putney, a fifth grade student is the new marble champion of Gladbrook. Mark won his title last Monday evening over a strong field of ten competitors, including defending champion Hilton Pappas. Hoyt Conant burned his hands quite severely Tuesday when his pipe fell into a waste basket and started a blaze which Mr. Conant tried to beat out with his hands. He left the room before the fire started and returned to find the desk, wall, and radio burning. 90 Years Ago May 16, 1929 Last Wednesday a dozen or more neighbors went to the farm of Mrs. Adolph Bruene, and helped her with spring work, which had run behind on account of a sickness in the family. The Northern congratulates the local Methodist church on being able to secure the services of Rev. A. E. Kepford, D. D., of Cedar Rapids, to fill the pulpit until the conference is held next fall. Mr. Kepford is one of the best known lectures on education, social, and religious matters in the state.
