30 Years Ago March 24, 1989 The old Stoner’s Pizza building came tumbling down last week to make room for a parking lot for Main Street and for the Memorial Building. S. L. Baumeier Co. knocked the building in and cleaned up the debris. Alfreda L. (Mrs. John) Steiert, 87, of Gladbrook, passed away Saturday morning at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook from a stroke. Vern and Alice Delfs of Marshalltown will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Ward W. Handorf of Gladbrook will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. A son, Blake Jared, was born March 14, to Duane and Laura Woebbeking of Gladbrook. He has a brother, Ryan and sister, Shauna to welcome him home. Grandparents are Vern and Barb Woebbeking of Gladbrook and Karen and George Schultz of Des Moines. 40 Years Ago March 30, 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Steve Nugent of Boone are the parents of a daughter, Courtney Kay, born March 22. She was greeted at home by a sister, Darci, 7 years old, and a brother Jason 2 1/2 years old. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Roger Beck of Garwin and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Nugent of Marshalltown. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Stamp, Monticello, became the parents of a daughter, Nadia Ilise, born March 22. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Stamp of Garwin. Spring is here, well that was questionable to us in this area the past weekend. It began Friday as Mother Nature sent rain, then a combination of rain, sleet, and snow, ending the ordeal late Saturday after dumping about four inches of snow on the ground. The strong blizzard like winds and cold temperatures Saturday caused power outages in the area. Nancy Lee Strunk and Kipp Randall Larsen were united in marriage on March 24. 50 Years Ago March 21, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Richard K. Bruene announce the plans for a May 24th wedding of their daughter Denise Ann, to Barton Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Baker of Clinton. Jane Laurel Hansen of Lincoln was among 84 Iowa Methodist Hospital School of Nursing freshmen who received their caps at the annual Capping Ceremonies Friday, March 14. Lt. and Mrs. Jerry Lage are the parents of a baby girl, Robin Michelle, born March 15, in Austin, Texas. Frank Giles, 78, retired automobile dealer, passed away at his home Tuesday morning. He had been in failing health for several years. 60 Years Ago March 20, 1959 Gladbrook State Champs!!! The Gladbrook Pantherettes scored a triumph Saturday in the finals of the Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament that caused newspapers to re-write their headlines and brought cheers from thousands in the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. The de-throning of West Central Maynard 72-60, was accomplished by girls who played one of the greatest games ever to be seen in girls basketball, one that is still drawing accolades from the coaches, sport’s writers, radio, and TV commentators who saw the game. Gladbrook, possessing what might well be the best balanced forward court in tournament history, rolled up the second highest Championship game score, ranking only below 79-59 victory by Hansell in 1951. The engagement of Marion Champlin de Booy of San Francisco and 1st Lt. Irwin H. Wentzien, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Wentzien of Gladbrook has been announced. The wedding will take place June 20. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Junior Dierks March 16. He has been named Kent Allen. This is their second child, they have another son, Donn. Mrs. Dierks is the former Lois Hooper. A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jay Shouse, March 16. Mrs. Shouse is the former Sharon Ohrt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ohrt. A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. William Schultz on March 15. The William Dahms blacksmith shop was sold Tuesday to Irvin (Pee Wee) Goos, who will open for business around April 1st. The 1959 Girls State Tournament Finals will be etched deep into the memories of the 12,500 fans attending the game. 700 Gladbrook basketball fans were snowbound in Des Moines Saturday night as a howling blizzard combined with the sound effects of thunder and lightning reached its peek in intensity. 70 Years Ago March 18, 1949 Rev. and Mrs. H. W. Barten will hold an open house at the new parsonage of the Evangelical and Reformed Church located on West Main Street. Coach Tannatt has issued the notice this week that due to lack of interest and an insufficient number of boys wanting to take part, there will be no spring baseball program at GHS. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gienger celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Otis McKinney are the parents of a son born to them on March 14. He has been named Dale Herman. They have two other boys, Lynn and Mark. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Dahms, of Marshalltown, are the parents of a daughter, born Sunday at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. 80 Years Ago March 17, 1939 An ice jam swept the wooden dam recently built by the Chicago & Northwestern railroad company, down Wolf Creek Monday, piling the new timber swirling them about until they finally dislodged and sent down stream despite the efforts of the section crew to break up the jam and save the dam. The section men did manage to save the railroad bridges endangered by the ice and high water. Mrs. Albert Meyer, well known to the people of Gladbrook and Lincoln communities, passed away suddenly while sitting in a chair visting with a friend. At Monday’s school election, 618 votes were cast. It is believed to be that this is the largest in the history of the city. John Blohm, farmer, living south of Reinbeck, reports that 15 of his brood sows have farrowed 144 pigs within the past month and from these litters there are still living 138 pigs, making better than average of 9 pigs per sow. 90 Years Ago March 21, 1929 Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Boll, of near Beaman, are the proud parents of a nice little daughter born the first of the week. Everyone is doing well. Mrs. Boll was the former Grace Koster. Dr. H. T. Lohse passed away on March13 following a stroke of apoplexy while leading a horse into a blacksmith shop.
