Conservation-2018 Bow Shoot in the Books By: Kevin Williams, Grundy County Conservation’s Operation Supervisor
August and 10th and 11th Grundy County Conservation staff put on another great 3D bow shoot at the Black Hawk Wildlife area just North of Morrison. There were shooters showing up shortly after 7AM and others that didn’t start until near the 12:30PM ending time. This year, however, it was without the help from Scheels All Sports. Sadly, we were informed last year following the event that management had chosen to withdraw their support and would be focusing efforts on another event. We had many shooters asking where Scheels was this year and expressing their disappointment. So, we were forced to go it alone but it was on with the show and we had a good event. We were blessed with beautiful weather. Over the two day event, shooters tested their skills on our 40 target course. Many of the shooters raved about the set up and design of the course. This year’s course featured a large variety of animals, such as Ibex and Impala from across the pond in Africa to our larger North American animals like a Bison, Elk and Caribou. For many shooters, this provides an opportunity to sling an arrow at animals we will never be fortunate enough to hunt. While many shooters travel across the state shooting at these events each weekend, many area bowhunters use this event to “begin the season”. It is the excuse to begin fine-tuning and strengthening the muscles for the fall hunting season. Whatever the reason for attending the event, I would like to thank everyone for coming out and shooting the shoot this past weekend. And to all the bow hunters out there that are chomping at the bit to crawl up a tree and send an arrow at a large Iowa buck this fall, good luck and be safe. High scores for each category will be posted later on the county website – grundycounty.org.
