Steel Shooters of Traer

The Steel Shooters of Traer team includes, front row, Kaleb Klein, Nate Gibson, Sydney Vavroch, Delanie Taylor, Amber Fink. Back row, Coach Pet: Holden, Matt Whannel, Kayla Vavroch, Grace Asmussen, Megan Carty, Amaya Peterson, Tanner Calderwood, Alex Meggers and Assistant Coach Mike Calderwood. Not pictured are Stan Miller, Sam Snyder, Jacob Lowe and Spencer Larsen. The team has kids from the Traer, Gladbrook and Dysart areas.

The Steel Shooters of Traer had a successful shooting season. They competed at national, regional, state and local levels, taking top honors in each of them. National Match The Steel Shooters competed in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships July 14-21 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH. Over 500 youth from 19 states competed. Competitors shot at a series of steel targets in the least amount of time. Their shooting events included competition in rim fire pistol, center fire pistol, rifle optics, rifle iron sights, 1911 and pistol caliber carbine (PCC). The Steel Shooters placed in each event. The collegiate open squad of Tanner Calderwood and Matt Whannel placed first in 1911 pistol, Tanner 60.5, Matt 72.74, first in PCC Tanner 45.39 and Matt 54.41, second place in center fire pistol, Tanner 63.11, Matt 101.28, second place in iron rifle, Tanner 50.39, Matt 55.70 and second place in optic rifle, Tanner 45.43, Matt 56.96. The intermediate squad of Nate Gibson, Kaleb Klein, Sydney Vavroch and Alex Meggers placed second in PCC, Nate 33.61, Kaleb 43.60, Sydney 79.78 and Alex 86.34, and second place in iron rifle, Nate 28.21, Kaleb 44.33, Sydney 62.37 and Alex 86.34. Individually, Steel Shooter Nate Gibson took top honors with first place in the intermediate/advanced division in PCC 33.61, 1911 pistol 72.81, iron rifle 28.21, optic rifle 29.68 and rim fire pistol 31.58. Nate shot sub 30 second match times, which has never been done before at the SASP National Championships. Kaleb Klein placed first in the intermediate/entry level division in rim fire pistol 42.73, second place in optic rifle 36.18, second place in PCC 43.60, and second place in iron rifle 44.33. Megan Carty took second place in the senior/varsity ladies division in center fire pistol 56.52 and third place in 1911 pistol 66.44.
