MIYBT Rallies to the Cause

Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team members reached out to relief workers in Marshalltown by organizing and serving a free lunch of hot burgers, ice-cold drinks, fresh cookies and more on July 27. Marshall County Farm Bureau congratulates the team members for another outstanding example of community service.

In the aftermath of any major disaster, city and utility workers are the unsung heroes of the cleanup and recovery efforts, oftentimes logging unbroken strings of 14- to 16-hour days in order to clear streets and restore services to affected residents and businesses as quickly as possible.

Keenly aware of this, members of the Mid-Iowa Youth Beef Team (MIYBT) put a plan together to provide these workers with a free meal and a short break from their grueling task in appreciation of their efforts following the EF3 tornado that ravaged Marshalltown the afternoon of July 19.

As the word spread about the group’s community service project, donations of assorted chips and beverages, dozens of cookies, burgers and buns, and more flooded in from family members, friends, concerned citizens and businesses.

And so, for a couple of hours on Friday, July 27, team members and their partners gathered together at the city’s shop facility on East Main Street, helped fire up the grill and provided a hot meal to more than 100 people that included the relief workers from Marshalltown, Tama, Toledo, Newton and other municipalities as well as the city’s police department and KIX101.1/KFJB radio staff.

Before leaving the site, the team left cases of pop and chips at the facility for the workers. The rest of the food and supplies were donated to a homeless shelter serving meals just down the street.

Many of the contributions were anonymous but there are some folks that the team members would like to thank. They include: Iowa Premium, Tama Livestock Auction, Marshall County Cattlemen and their grill masters – Jim Mosher and Ron Klosterman, Marshall County Farm Bureau, Tama County Cattlemen, Wolfcreek Whirlwinds 4-H Club, Janee Zhorne Eisele and Karen Sawyer.
