Howard “Toby” Clough of Garwin was presented with a Quilt of Valor during his 90th birthday celebration on November 19. Toby served his country during world War II and spent a year in hospitals as a result of being severely burned when a crane he was working with came into contact with high voltage current. Members of the Central Iowa Quilt Sew-ciety form Marshalltown were on hand to make the presentation. The quilt was made by Denise Starits. Marvis Drew, President of the Central Iowa Quilt Sew=ciety of Marshalltown, explained that the Quilts of Valor is the brainchild of Blue Star Mom Catherine Roberts of Seaford,Delaware. Her son had been deployed to Iraq and she wanted to see the returning warriors welcomed home with the love and gratitude they deserved. Since 2003 the Quilts of Valor has be come a national grassroots community service effort. The quilts are stitched with love, prayers and healing thoughts. More than 80 quilts have been distributed by the Marshalltown group. It is a token of appreciation that says, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor.” The “Pledge of Allegiance” as told by Red Skelton, was read by Roseanne Anderson. Five of Toby’s children were on hand for the presentation and to celebrate his birthday.
