Message from Our Mayor

2016 Tama Co. Fair Queen Madeline Mussig

Here we are in August Corn Carnival and the 4-H Fair are done and the State Fair is this week. Summer is about over and school is starting in a few weeks. Let’s go back to the 4-H Fair first. I really enjoy watching all the 4-H kids showing their projects both livestock and non livestock exhibits. We had a lot of local winners in all divisions of 4-H. Congratulations to all of you kids whether you received a purple ribbon or not. Showing your years worth of work on your project is a learning experience and something you will always have.

Jo and I really enjoyed the Clover Kids showing their bottle beef projects. The kids are so proud of their calves and getting to lead them into the show ring for the first time. They are fun to watch and it doesn’t hurt to have a grandson showing for the first time either. This is a great family project for all Clover Kids and it is great for parents and siblings working together. 4-H and FFA are great organizations for all youth to grow up with. I know all of us seniors enjoy watching all of the kids with their projects.

It also helps to have a local food stand open from 7AM to 8PM every day. Great food and really great pie! It takes 2 to 3 pieces to get me through the day. A big thank you goes out to the young men and women who organize and run the project. The fair wouldn’t be the same without you. Thank you for all your hard work!

One of the greatest things to happen at the fair was the crowning of Madeline Mussig as the Tama County Fair Queen. This was a well deserved honor to a Gladbrook girl. We all wish her the best in the State Fair competition this week. She will represent both Gladbrook and Tama County very well. Good luck, Madeline!

Also on the 4-H side, congratulations to Kenneth Strohbehn who will be going into the State 4-H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair. Thank you Ken for all of the time you have given to our young people over the years.

Kenneth Strohbehn of Gladbrook will be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame on August 21, 3:30 p.m. at the 4-H Building at the Iowa State Fair.

On the city side we are moving forward on getting a new well drilled. As with all government projects this seems to be moving along slowly but it is moving. On the other hand the lagoon project is moving along at a good pace along with several sewage lines being replaced throughout the town.

The bike trail is being upgraded at this time and will be a very nice place to ride a bike or just walk when it is completed. The bridge on Green St. (Dutch Row) will get started in the next two weeks and will be completed in 45 days. As you can see Gladbrook is Alive and Well!

For 99% of you fine people here in Gladbrook and the surrounding area, this is the end of my letter. For a very few of you, the rest is for you. If you feel there is a problem or something that you think can be improved with our employees or our running of anything, talk to me or a council person and we will look into it. If you send an unsigned letter to me, it will go straight into the waste basket. Your cowardly action of staying anonymous and mailing several unsigned letters to people here in town has cost the city a very good library director. The library was improving greatly with a lot of new programs and a lot more public usage. That is all out the window now thanks to your cowardly action. We cannot correct the problem you have caused.
