REINBECK – As Americans across the country commemorated the 250th anniversary of the signing and adoption of the Declaration of Independence last weekend, Reinbeck took it to the next level by hosting the town’s annual Fourth of July bash while also marking its sesquicentennial. The grand parade took place Saturday afternoon, July 4, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The heavy rains of the past week had mercifully relented, leading to mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s, along with a high muggy factor and precious little wind. Parade grand marshals this year were Ray and Sandi Rannfeldt, riding atop a white convertible driven by Shriner Chris Witt. Reigning Iowa State Fair Queen Riah Schrage of Grundy County followed close behind atop another convertible. First responders from multiple area departments, including Reinbeck, were out in full force. Reunion classes were also well represented, including the Reinbeck Class of 1976 which graduated during America’s Bicentennial. Earlier that morning, an all-class reunion was held at the G-R High School gym. “Whether you’re a Ram or a Rebel, we can’t wait to see you,” the reunion flyer proclaimed. First place in the parade contest was won by St. John’s Lutheran Church of Reinbeck which featured a rainforest theme in coordination with its Vacation Bible School program; second place was awarded to the Reinbeck Farmer’s Market for the committee’s Grant Wood/American Gothic-theme; third place went to New Life Church for its patriotic “Freedom is in Jesus” theme. As has become tradition, Janet Schildroth and her daughter, Jodi Michael, drove their beautifully restored John Deere tractors in the parade while promoting the upcoming Grundy County Fair. Both tractors belonged to Janet’s late father, Everett “Bosco” Wyatt. Smiling and waving to the crowds from their respective perches, large American flags streaming behind them, the scene was the epitome of small-town patriotic pride – pride which, 250 years later, continues to form the bedrock of the greatest nation on God’s earth.
