UNION GROVE LAKE – The Tama Pump bar and grill and the Lake & Park Holding Corporation hosted the 2026 Fishing Derby at Union Grove State Park south of Gladbrook on Saturday, June 6, from 7 a.m. to noon. For an entry fee of $25, participants were invited to fish Union Grove Lake for the longest walleye, catfish and bass plus the heaviest combined weight of five panfish. Proceeds from the derby have been earmarked for future walleye stocking. Following the derby, lunch was served and prizes awarded at the park’s Youth Center. Steve Schmitz was the walleye champion at 15 1/2 inches (first photo); Jeff Pentz won for the longest largemouth bass at 17 1/2 inches (second photo); and Jake Gardner was the panfish champion with 3 pounds, 12 ounces (third photo). Per a social media post made Sunday announcing the winners, organizers said turnout was good and everyone who participated received at least two prizes made possible by the more than 30 sponsors.
