MILFORD – Tama County 4-H youth earned top finishes at the Iowa 4-H State Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) Contest held April 11 at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in rural Milford.

The Tama Turkeys (Jude Grismer, Gabriel Grismer, and Wyatt Upah) captured first place in the junior team division, while the Tama Toads (Marie Grismer, Max Nelson, Levi Murty, and Gavin Jones-Clay County) earned second place in the senior team division, competing against teams from across the state. In addition to team awards, Marie earned third place individual honors in the senior division.

The Iowa 4-H WHEP competition, offered through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, provides youth the opportunity to test their wildlife knowledge in a friendly, team-based competition. Youth evaluate wildlife habitat, identify animal species, and develop science-based recommendations for habitat improvement.

Through WHEP, participants build skills in critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and decision-making. These hands-on learning experiences help youth become Beyond Ready, preparing them for future careers, college, and leadership opportunities while fostering an understanding of environmental stewardship.

“These youth demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations,” said Coach Haley Princehouse. “Programs like WHEP give young people the tools and confidence to think critically, work collaboratively, and take initiative–skills that go far beyond competition day.” Princehouse coaches the teams alongside Jenny Hulme – both staff members with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Tama County.

Youth prepared for the state contest through regular practices and hands-on learning opportunities, gathering three times each month since December, along with additional practice on their own time.

Supported by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Tama County, Tama County 4-H provides hands-on educational experiences that help youth develop leadership, critical thinking, and workforce-ready skills through programs such as WHEP.
