GR School Board meeting

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board meeting began with a public hearing for a budget amendment. After receiving no questions, the regular meeting was called to order. Darbie Lynch spoke to the board about how she was disappointed that the school board members did not attend the Senior Award Night or Baccalaureate. There was no correspondence. The agenda and consent agenda were approved, which brought up discussion about the K-12 guidance counselor position.

Bids from PCI for the Reinbeck elementary parking lot project were not approved. The school has received bids to repair the high school and elementary parking lots for $8143.75. The board discussed temporary parking options or re-doing the lot. No action has been taken at this time and the board plans on hiring an engineer to explore different options. All recommendations for termination of staff were approved, including Annette Koch, special education assistant, Brandy Sealman, nurse, Jerry Widdel and Rick Benda, custodial. A former employee requested to be paid for unused sick days, but the board agreed to deny this request.

School fees, lunch and breakfast prices, and policies from IASB were all approved. It was also approved to form a committee of three board members for the Richard Grimm Scholarship Trust Distribution and Establish Frances Grimm Scholarship Trust. Chris Frischmeyer gave an update on the Reinbeck Daycare addition. Bids are open and the addition will cost around $275,000. The daycare plans to break ground on June 1 and should be completed four months after the start date, weather permitting. 28E Amendment/Lease Amendment with the Reinbeck Daycare was approved.

It was approved to install new playground equipment at the elementary to replace the equipment in the fenced off area costing $18,724. The equipment will be installed by volunteers from New Life Church. Replacing the field lights at the football field in Gladbrook was approved. Kapaun Consulting Engineers will be replacing them for $175,000-180,000 and will attempt to have them replaced before the first football game at the end of August. It was also approved to cut off internet, phone, and cable services to the Gladbrook Building on August 1.

Renaming of buildings and changing signs on the buildings was approved. The elementary will read Gladbrook-Reinbeck Elementary and the high school will become Gladbrook-Reinbeck Junior and Senior High School. There was no business in other. The budget amendment for 2014-15 was approved. After much discussion regarding sharing spring sports with Grundy Center, it was approved to share spring sports after amending the agreement making G-R the host school for golf. Administrative contracts and salaries for 2015-16 were approved. The sale of two lathes to Luke Beenken for $150 also passed.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Holloway gave information on the Western Outreach Center. Cost of operations to Hawkeye Community College are $10,000 per school. A draft memorandum was created stating responsibilities for each school and asking for a multi-year agreement. A joint meeting with the Eldora-New Providence school board will take place on June 1 to discuss functions and expectations of the new superintendent. This meeting will take place at Johnny Ray’s in Grundy Center. Each board member was awarded a certificate by Mr. Holloway during school board recognition. The next regular board meeting will take place on June 18 at 6:30.
