TRAER – Tama County Clover Kid and 4-H members got an exciting, hands-on look into the world of animal health during an educational visit to the North Tama Vet Clinic in Traer on Saturday, Jan. 17. The special event gave youth a chance to engage directly with veterinary professionals, explore behind-the-scenes areas of the clinic, and learn more about what it takes to care for animals of all shapes and sizes.

Participants had the opportunity to meet several animals housed at the clinic and learn how veterinarians assess and care for them. Youth also toured the surgery room, where staff explained how surgical tools and equipment help keep animals safe and healthy during procedures. One of the highlights of the day was the chance to dress up like a veterinarian – complete with gowns and gloves – helping kids imagine themselves in the role as they learned about real medical instruments and how they are used.

In addition to the hands-on activities, youth were able to explore animal anatomy by observing the inside of a pig. The experience helped participants better understand how veterinarians diagnose health issues and why knowledge of animal physiology is so important.

The visit offered a unique blend of fun and learning, inspiring curiosity and giving young people a closer look at careers in veterinary medicine.

In the spirit of 4-H and service, many members brought donations of dog and cat supplies to be shared with the Tama County Humane Society.

Tama County 4-H would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nicole Knaack and the North Tama Vet Clinic for providing such an engaging and educational experience for local youth.

4-H is a hands-on youth program that builds leadership, confidence, and real life skills. In Iowa, 4-H is part of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, helping young people learn, lead, and grow. These programs and more are open to all youth!
