Wolverines shellac Spartans for fourth win of season
MAXWELL – The GMG Wolverines football team notched their fourth victory of the season last Friday night in an 8-Man District 6 clash with Collins-Maxwell, shellacking the Spartans 56-6 on the road.
Collins-Maxwell’s only points came in the first quarter courtesy of quarterback Reagan Peters’s 31-yard carry into the end zone. GMG recorded two TDs in the first quarter plus another 20 points in the second to lead 32-6 heading into the break. In the third quarter, the Wolverines scored 16 points, followed by another eight in the final quarter.
GMG quarterback Ethan Klemesrud finished with 25 carries for 197 yards and four touchdowns while also going 4-for-6 passing for 87 yards and two more scores. Bodie Hutchinson rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Easton Sash hauled in touchdown receptions of 40 and 21 yards.
Klemesrud led the GMG defense with 13 stops. Jacob Snider totaled 8.5 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and had an interception. Hutchinson added seven stops, while Cullen Elmore returned one of his two fumble recoveries 10 yards for a touchdown.
The Wolverines limited the Spartans to just one (1) passing yard total Friday night. On the ground, Collins-Maxwell was equally stymied, managing just 50 rushing yards.
Even without the Week 5 statistics included, Klemesrud remained No. 1 in the state across all classes for total tackles with 76, just ahead of Marshalltown senior offensive lineman John Schoenfelder with 73.5.
Heading into Week 6, GMG was 4-2 (1-2) on the season, while Collins-Maxwell was 1-4 (2-1).
Tonight, Friday, Oct. 2, the Wolverines were set to host district foe North Tama (3-2, 2-1). The Redhawks are coming in cold after being unable to play last week’s game due to a Meskwaki Settlement forfeit.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Garwin.
