Wolverines wallop Plainsmen 72-28 for non-conference win
BELLE PLAINE – The GMG boys basketball team exited winter break with a wallop of a win, defeating the winless Belle Plaine Plainsmen 72-28 in a non-conference road contest Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, in Belle Plaine.
Statistics were not available for either team in time for publication. With the win over Belle Plaine, the Wolverine boys improved to 5-3 (3-2) ahead of their next scheduled Iowa Star South Division matchup – a road contest with the North Tama Redhawks (5-3, 4-1) set for this past Thursday in Traer. Tama-Grundy Publishing will feature coverage from that game in next week’s papers.
Ahead of the boys game in Belle Plaine, GMG’s girls also notched a win, defeating the Plainsmen (1-9), 36-27, to improve to 4-5 (3-1) on the season. While full stats were not available for either team, GMG led for much of the first quarter before Belle Plaine pulled ahead right at the break to lead 9-7 heading into the second quarter. The Plainsmen then led for much of the second quarter before the Wolverines managed to surge just enough to secure a one-point lead at the half, 14-13.
In the third quarter, the teams went back and forth several times; Belle Plaine led 23-20 at the final break. In the fourth quarter, GMG put up a game-high 16 points to Belle Plaine’s four to secure the non-conference win.
The Wolverines will be back home in Garwin tonight, Friday, Jan. 9, for another Division showdown with BCLUW. The evening is being billed as “Throwback Night” in a nod to the school district’s consolidation history between the Garwin Roughriders and Green Mountain Mounties. The girls’ game tips off at 6:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.
