Gladbrook-Reinbeck succumbs to Woodbine in 8-Man state football semifinals, 38-30

CEDAR FALLS — Landon Blum’s leaping 10-yard touchdown catch with 3:40 remaining lifted No. 2 seed Woodbine to a 38-30 victory over No. 3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the Wednesday, Nov. 12, 8-Player state semifinal football game at the UNI-Dome.

Blum’s catch came on fourth-and-goal and capped a 16-play, 65-yard drive for the Tigers (11-0), who had lost their 16-point lead.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (11-1) fell behind 30-14 after a 53-yard Blum touchdown reception two plays into the second half, but the Rebels rallied. Senior wide receiver Hudson Clark hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from senior Trevor Mathern with 48 seconds left in the third quarter, and junior running back Treyvon Herron’s 32-yard interception return on the first play of the fourth brought G-R back to a 30-all tie.

Woodbine’s ensuing drive regained an eight-point lead, and the Tiger defense stopped the Rebels on downs at Woodbine’s 28-yard-line with 17 seconds left.

Woodbine outgained G-R 359-286 as two first-half interceptions hindered the Rebels’ chances. Mathern finished 9-for-18 for 109 yards with three touchdowns and two picks. Clark had five grabs for 63 yards, while Herron had four catches for 46 yards and two TDs.

Herron led the Rebels on the ground as well, getting 84 yards on 13 carries. Mathern added 69 yards on 14 attempts. Herron and Clark had nine tackles apiece for the G-R defense, with Herron making three tackles for loss.

Pryor was 13-for-21 for 231 yards and four TDs for Woodbine. Micah Moores carried 27 times for 102 yards and a touchdown, and he had four receptions for 77 yards and two more scores. Blum finished with five grabs for 82 yards and two TDs.

Woodbine was set to face top-seeded Bishop Garrigan (12-0) in the 8-Player finals on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Golden Bears beat Audubon 60-36 in Wednesday’s first semifinal game.
