GLADBROOK – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team shut out the GMG Wolverines 63-0 in an 8-player District 6 clash last Friday evening at “The Pit” in Gladbrook, marking not only a Homecoming win but also the team’s fourth victory in a row to remain undefeated on the season.
The Rebels’ fan base turned out in droves for the game, packing both the bleachers and practically every available space along the north field fence and behind the endzone.
According to reporting by KCCI, Gladbrook-Reinbeck is one of only 10 teams in 8-player this season to remain unbeaten following the Week 4 games. The other nine teams include Audubon, Bishop Garrigan, Central Elkader, Easton Valley, Edgewood-Colesburg, GTRA (Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire), Iowa Valley (5-0), Southeast Warren, and Woodbine.
G-R spent the first period against the Wolverines Friday night getting out to an early, resounding lead, racking up 42 points across six touchdowns and with every extra point good courtesy of junior Brayden Utter.
On just the second play of the game, G-R senior quarterback Trevor Mathern handed off to junior running back Treyvon Herron who easily ran it in for the first touchdown.

After GMG quickly turned it over on downs, Mathern carried in the next touchdown himself on the second play, busting through multiple tackles in the process.
GMG again turned over on downs, after which senior wide receiver Hudson Clark ran in the night’s third touchdown, streaking 49 yards across the field to the endzone. Mere seconds later, Clark intercepted the ball to run in his second TD on a 32-yard lope.
After taking back possession at roughly the halfway point of the first quarter, the Wolverines quickly clicked through downs and the ball was back again in G-R’s hands. On the second play, Herron ran in his second touchdown of the evening for the Rebels, a 40-yard blur that seemed to give the Wolverines whiplash.
Despite their best efforts, GMG turned the ball over on downs once again. Clark fielded the punt return – masterfully hopping over, through, and around GMG players like a ballerina – before he was finally brought down at the 5-yard line. On the next play, he took an easy toss from Mathern for the TD. The first period ended a couple minutes later with the Rebels up 42-0.
G-R pulled back for the remainder of the game, scoring one touchdown apiece in the second, third, and fourth periods including sophomore Bennett Sieh’s 8-yard rush in the second.

On the evening, Mathern was 2-for-2, passing for eight yards and a touchdown, while backup quarterback Sieh was 2-for-4, passing for 17 yards and a touchdown. The Rebels rushed for 257 yards total to GMG’s 56. On defense, G-R had 32 tackles, including eight for loss, while GMG managed a dozen.
During Homecoming Happenings held the Wednesday prior, G-R crowned King Wyatt Giesking and Queen Jayla Hemann. During halftime Friday night, G-R’s 2015 Class A state football championship was recognized.
Earlier this week, the G-R Fine Arts Booster Club posted on social media a fervent thank you to all the fans who attended the Homecoming game, writing, “There are no words to adequately describe the concession stand Friday night. There were lines at all of the concession stand windows from the time they were opened until the time ran out on the game clock. The real winner Friday night was the [Gladbrook-Reinbeck] Fine Arts programs. The concession stand had the highest receipts in 20 years.”
The post went on to thank those who helped with concessions including Pastor John Granchie and Peace Church in Gladbrook which sponsored $5 food vouchers during the game, equating to a $2,500 donation.
The club also thanked Steve Murty and the Tama County Cattlemen for grilling and donating most of the hamburgers, and Lincoln Savings Bank for providing the majority of the concession stand volunteers.

“Lastly, to all of the GR and GMG fans who waited so patiently in line at the concession stand. Without your patience and understanding, the near record amount of receipts would not have been possible,” the club said.
Tonight, Friday, Sept. 26, the Rebels (4-0) head to Gilbertville to take on Don Bosco (2-1) in non-district action, while GMG (0-4) is at home against Collins-Maxwell (3-1) in further District 6 play.
Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
