COLO – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels traveled to Colo last Friday and spent four periods romping around the Royals, racking up 77 points to notch their second shutout of the season.

G-R (3-0, 2-0) remained undefeated following the road game with fellow District 6 foe Colo-NESCO (1-2).

The Rebels wasted no time on Sept. 12, scoring 30 points against the Royals in the first period; 20 in the second; 13 in the third; and 14 in the fourth.

Rebel senior signal caller Trevor Mathern was 5-for-5 for 69 passing yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to fellow senior Hudson Clark. Mathern also hauled in two TDs himself. Sophomore Bennett Sieh was 3-for-4 for 19 yards.

G-R’s rushing game mostly went unanswered by the Royals defense, with the Rebels accumulating 280 yards. Sophomore Chad Gutknecht ran in two touchdowns, while Hudson Clark, sophomore Kooper Larsen, freshman Macklin Clark, junior Treyvon Herron, and junior Brayden Utter all scored one apiece.

The Rebel defense tackled 33 times in total (10 for a loss). G-R also made three interceptions including Mathern who amassed 37 yards on the return. Junior Karson Van Heiden recovered one Royal fumble. Against the dominating Rebel defense, Colo-NESCO rushed for just 24 yards and ended up in negative territory on receiving yards.

Utter kicked in nine extra points out of 11 attempts for the Rebels.

Ahead of tonight’s Homecoming game with GMG (0-3), another District 6 competitor, G-R was ranked No. 3 in 8-player by Radio Iowa and No. 4 by both Sports Illustrated and the Des Moines Register.
