Rebel runners open season at Marshalltown Early Bird

MARSHALLTOWN – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck cross country team rolled out the 2025-26 season at Marshalltown’s Bobcat Early Bird meet Aug. 28 at Marshalltown Community College.
The Rebel boys placed 11th as a team while the hosts won the 11-team meet with 43 points.
Freshman Caleb Plifkin led G-R, clocking in at 19 minutes, 14 seconds for 16th place. Junior Caleb Bowser was 54th, junior Campbell Gramer was 63rd, freshman Braiden Sager was 67th, and freshman Levi Coughenour was 68th.
Marshalltown junior Preston Johnson won the meet with a time of 15 minutes, 25.7 seconds. He was nearly 30 seconds ahead of reigning Class 2A state champion Emerson Vokes of Grundy Center, who was the runner-up at 15:54.6.
The Rebels lone female competitor was sophomore Katelyn Monaghan who crossed the finish line 52nd in the junior varsity race with a time of 38:00.7.
G-R returned to action a week later this past Thursday, Sept. 4, with the challenging Pine Lake Run hosted by South Hardin in Eldora.
The Rebels will next compete in the Dick Pollitt Go-Hawk Classic on Sept. 9 in Waverly on Wartburg College’s Max Championship Cross Country Course.
