Following impressive seasons on the hardwood, Gladbrook-Reinbeck juniors Michael Boyd and Drew Eilers along with Green Mountain-Garwin senior Jabari Woodbury were all recently named to the 2023-24 Times-Republican All-Area Boys Basketball Teams as first team selections, while G-R head coach Scott Kiburis – who took his team all the way to the state quarterfinals this season – was named Coach of the Year.

Boyd, a forward, averaged 14 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Rebels as the team’s leading scorer. He also led in blocks with 46 while tallying 198 rebounds, 77 assists, and 32 steals.

Eilers, also a forward, averaged 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game as the Rebels’ leading rebounder, while also tallying 64 assists, 27 steals, and 10 blocks.

Woodbury, who plays forward for GMG, led the Wolverines in almost every category other than blocks. He averaged 17 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, while also recording a whopping 100 assists and 76 steals.

The Wolverines ended the 2023-24 season 11-12 (6-6) and fourth in the Iowa Star South, while the Rebels ended the season 21-6 (5-3) and second in the North Iowa Cedar-West behind Grundy Center.

Coach of the Year

G-R head coach Scott Kiburis was named Coach of the Year by the T-R this season alongside Grundy Center’s Brent Thoren.

Under Kiburis, the Rebels were the Class 1A District 11 champions after beating the previously undefeated Keota Eagles 67-62.

In the substate final, G-R earned a return trip to the state tournament by narrowly taking down No. 10 Kee Community.

The Rebels’ 2023-24 season ended at State with a quarterfinal loss 45-36 to Marquette Catholic.

Second and third team selections

Alongside his teammates, G-R senior guard Isaac Clark was named to the 2023-24 T-R All-Area Boys Basketball Teams as a second team pick, averaging 11.7 points and 3 rebounds per game. He led the Rebels in assists with 123.

Area student-athletes tapped as third team selections by the T-R include G-R sophomore guard Hudson Clark and GMG sophomore guard Rider Kupka.
