Spartan boys rally past G-R boys
GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy Center’s Tiernan Vokes made a shot with four seconds remaining to push his team past Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 49-48, in NICL West boys basketball action at Grundy Center High School last Thursday, Feb. 1.
Vokes finished with 12 points, 10 coming in the second half. Colin Gordon and Jalen Kirkpatrick added 10 points each.
The Rebels scored with just over a minute remaining to take a 48-43 lead. Gordon answered for the Spartans on the next possession, then came up with a steal on the other end. Brody Zinkula made two free throws with 17 seconds left, and Gordon stepped up again to take a charge in the backcourt when G-R tried to move the ball through Spartan pressure.
On the Spartans’ next possession, Kirkpatrick weaved a pass into Vokes in the lane, who turned around for the jumper in front of the free-throw line for the Spartan lead. Grundy prevented G-R from getting a good look at the basket on the final possession to seal the victory.
G-R’s Michael Boyd led all scorers with 20 points. Isaac Clark and Drew Eilers contributed 10 points each.
On Monday, the Rebels narrowly beat Union 57-55 in a home court matchup and increased to 15-5 (5-3) on the season for second in the conference behind Grundy Center.
After taking on Columbus Catholic on Tuesday at home, the Rebels were scheduled to travel to Colo-NESCO for their final regular season game.
