MASON CITY – Standout GMG wrestler Brooklyn Mitchell made it to the semifinals last week at the Region 7 state qualifier tournament held in Mason City on Friday.
Mitchell, a freshman at Garwin-Green Mountain High School, wrestled this season as a member of the talented South Tama County girls team.
After receiving a pair of byes in the opening rounds, Mitchell faced Tripoli’s Nora Schellhorn in the 145-pound quarterfinals – defeating her by pinfall in one minute, 22 seconds.
In her semifinal match, she took on Lauren Rodgers of Woodward-Granger (32-3) who won by decision 7-1. Rodgers would go on to win the regional championship.
In the consolation bracket, Mitchell went 0-2. She finished the day in sixth place overall and ended her season 31-19.
Four of Mitchell’s STC teammates qualified for state during the tournament including regional champions Maeley Elsbury who won the 135-pound title and sister Autumn Elsbury who topped the podium at 170 pounds.
Kinley Jimenez was third at 235 pounds and Abigail Chyma was fourth at 155 pounds.
