Collins-Maxwell too much for GMG football

MAXWELL — Collins-Maxwell jumped out to a 48-6 halftime lead en route to a season-opening 60-28 victory over GMG on Friday night.

The host Spartans compiled 412 yards of total offense and capitalized on four takeaways by their defense. Josef Dvorak had nine tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense, and he added five receptions for 99 yards and two touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown for C-M.

Collins-Maxwell quarterback Cooper Wierson threw for 231 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 116 yards and three more scores.

GMG was led by Jabari Woodbury, who had eight catches for 98 yards and rushed five times for 125 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Slate Witte went 14-for-21 passing for 169 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Landon Stonewall and Rider Kupka both caught touchdowns for the Wolverines.

Anthony Waters led the defense with 11 tackles, Woodbury had 8.5 stops, and Kupka picked off two passes.

Tomorrow night (Thursday, Aug. 31), the Wolverines (0-1) are scheduled to take on Janesville (1-0) in a road game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
