Kiburis scores 35 as G-R edges Aplington-Parkersburg

Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior William Kiburis scored a game-high 35 points and led Class 1A No. 5 Gladbrook-Reinbeck to a showstopping 83-80 victory at home over Class 2A No. 1 Aplington-Parkersburg on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

G-R scored 25 points in the first quarter and held an eight-point lead, but after A-P scored 19 in the second to cut the gap to 37-36 at half it was a close game until the final buzzer. Kiburis went 11-for-20 from the field and hit two 3-pointers while going 11-for-15 from the free-throw line to lead the Rebels.

Luke Riffey scored 15 points for G-R and hit three 3-pointers, while Caleb Egesdal scored 11. Drew Eilers added 10 points. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor, but G-R made the most of its opportunities on the glass. The Rebels had 30 rebounds, led by 12 from Eilers and nine from Kiburis. Kiburis also led the team in assists with eight, while Egesdal dished out five of his own.

A-P’s leading scorer was Garrett Hampen with 25.

No. 5 Rebels make quick work of Janesville

Five players scored in double figures as the Class 1A No. 5 Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team dispatched Janesville with ease, winning 92-31 in Thursday’s (Jan. 26) non-conference contest in Reinbeck.

Luke Riffey knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 21 points to lead the Rebels (15-1). Caleb Egesdal also made four 3-pointers on his way to 17 points, and William Kiburis also scored 17 points. Hudson Clark and Austin Vaverka chipped in with 10 points apiece off the bench.

Drew Eilers added eight points and Isaac Clark seven for G-R, which led 29-11 after the opening period of play.
