Wolverine girls walloped by Baxter

A two-point first quarter set the tone for a rough night at the office for GMG girls’ basketball as the Wolverines lost 54-24 Tuesday, Dec. 20, in an Iowa Star South conference matchup. Baxter is 7-1 and 6-0 in ISS play, while GMG dropped to 6-2 and 4-2 with the loss.

Bree Buswell scored a game-high 18 points for Baxter and was a key part of the Bolts shutting down any effort at a GMG comeback on both ends of the floor. Mandee Selover had 13 points and Emie Tuhn added 11 of her own.

For GMG it was Marriah Stonewall leading the charge with seven points and five rebounds. Reese Dieleman and Adelyn Sienknecht scored five points each.

Dylan Mathern recorded a game-high five assists for the Wolverines.

GMG’s next game is at Waterloo Christian on Jan. 3.

GMG boys routed by unbeaten Baxter

GMG boys’ basketball ran into a buzzsaw of an offensive attack Tuesday, Dec. 20, giving up 93 points to the unbeaten Baxter Bolts in a 93-35 loss. GMG drops to 3-5 and 3-3 in the Iowa Star South, while Baxter improves to 9-0 and 6-0.

The Wolverines were already trailing 52-21 at the halftime whistle and allowed four Baxter players to reach double-figures in scoring. Two players hit double-digits for GMG — the duo of Brayden Duden and Jabari Woodbury with 10 points apiece. Duden added six rebounds and Woodbury provided a team-best four assists.

Baxter was buoyed by 19 points from Carson Scroggins, 17 from Cody Damman, 16 from Trice Clapper and 14 by Treyton Travis.

Up next for GMG is a Jan. 3 game at Waterloo Christian.

Third-ranked Rebels continue unbeaten start

William Kiburis continued his strong start to the season and Gladbrook-Reinbeck kept its hot start to the 2022-23 season going with a 77-32 over North Tama on Dec. 20, moving the No. 3-ranked team in Class 1A to 7-0 on the season. North Tama dropped to 3-5.

Kiburis scored 26 points and shot 10-for-14 from the floor for G-R, which led 37-17 at the halftime break after an 11-11 first quarter. The Rebels shot 49.2 percent from the floor. Kiburis added 11 rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Luke Riffey joined him in double figures with 12 points and four rebounds. Caleb Egesdal had 11 points. G-R visits Hudson Jan. 3.
