Vaverka runs free as Rebels roll past North Iowa

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team trailed 7-6 after the opening quarter before blowing past North Iowa for a 70-13 victory in Friday’s 8-Man season opener for both teams.

The Rebels scored first on Austin Vaverka’s 44-yard touchdown run, but North Iowa countered with a long scoring drive and a 5-yard TD run by Frerichs Carson. Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored the game’s next 50 points to put it away.

Vaverka finished with seven carries for 201 yards and six touchdowns, scoring on runs of 44, 6, 4, 52, 29 and 61 yards. He also caught three passes for 25 yards and completed one pass for 35 yards.

Trypp Roszell completed 6-of-10 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns, hitting Aiden Hunemuller for a 13-yard scoring strike and Caleb Egesdal for an 11-yard score. Egesdal also returned an interception for a TD, and Ryan Koester returned a kick 67 yards for a fourth-quarter score.

Brogyn Greensky led North Iowa with 11 carries for 60 yards, while Noah Hofmann had two receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosts Colo-NESCO this Friday in the 8-Man District 4 opener.
