G-R girls overtake Tigers in double OT

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls varsity team made it a clean sweep of the South Hardin Tigers on Monday, though it took them two overtime periods to get there.

The Rebels, who took a 35-26 win over South Hardin in December, were on the hunt for their seventh win of the season.

The Rebels came out firing from long distance to start the night, hitting three three-pointers to take a 12-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Tigers worked the same vein on offense, attempting three points to help them keep pace with Gladbrook-Reinbeck. At half the Rebels still maintained a 24-21 lead.

South Hardin countered in the second half, capturing the lead in the third quarter and holding it by a narrow margin deep into the fourth.

Trailing by two points with time twindlling on the fourth quarter clock, junior Megan Cooley banked in a field goal to tie the score at 48 and send the game into overtime.

Cooley ended with a double-double, scoring 15 points while bringing down 12 rebounds.

A late free throw by South Hardin’s Hailey Rosonke pushed the game into the second overtime period, but from then on it was all Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

The Rebels pushed ahead in the closing minutes to come away with a 66-58 win.

Along with Cooley’s late-game heroics, the Rebels got a career-high contribution from senior guard Mahayla Olson who led her team with 26 points, nine coming from the free throw line and another 12 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Lauren Boyer was the third scorer for the Rebels Monday, totaling 11 points, while forward Katie Clark put in a gargantuan effort, crashing the boards for a team-high 19 rebounds.

The Rebels are currently 4-2 in the NICL West Conference, just behind AGWSR who they will face on Friday in Ackley.
