G-R, GMG to meet in Round 2

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels and the GMG Wolverines met once more on the volleyball court Wednesday as both teams advanced to the second round of the Class 1A regional playoffs.

In their opening match the Rebels quickly dispatched of Colo-NESCO winning in three sets with scores of 25-9, 25-6 and 25-10.

Ava Wyatt was the kills leader on the night with 11. The senior hitter also led the team with two blocks.

Megan Cooley was next with nine kills and Mahayla Olson had six.

From the line, the Rebels two back court specialists Breehan Dubberke and Emma McClintock were effective with four and three aces respectively. The Rebels as a whole scored a dominant 15 points from aces alone.

Meanwhile in Garwin, the GMG Wolverines legged out a tough five-set match against conferencemate Baxter to earn their 10th win of the season.

The two teams traded blows in the first four sets with scores of 25-21 (Baxter), 25-20 (GMG), 25-16 (Baxter) and 28-26 (GMG).

In the fifth, tie-breaking set the Wolverines accelerated past the Bolts to win 15-5.

Adelyn Sienknecht was the kills leader for GMG Monday night with 12. Next was Jenna Yilek with eight, Jessica Johnson with six and Kennadi Sederburg with five.

Sienknecht also led in digs with 10 and aces with four.

The Rebels and the Wolverines played the second round playoff match Wednesday evening.

G-R previously held a nine-game win streak over GMG dating back to 2016.
