GMG squeezes past Meskwaki

Senior end Xander Bowers breaks through the Meskwaki line during the Wolverines’ Week 4 win over the Warriors. After a winless campaign in 2020, the Wolverines have captured three wins in their first four games and look to face an undefeated Gladbrook-Reinbeck team this week in district action.

The Wolverines earned their third victory of the season Friday in a back and forth battle with the Meskwaki Warriors.

After a relatively quiet opening quarter, the Wolverines exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 20-6 to take a 28-12 lead into the halftime locker room.

Meskwaki swung back in the second half, outscoring GMG 24-12, but it wasn’t enough to finish off the rally.

GMG was led by another standout performance from quarterback Kooper Gill who was 9-of-12 passing for 184 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Three of Gill’s touchdown passes went to sophomore wideout Jabari Woodbury who ended with 108 yards on 4 receptions and three scores.

The other passing touchdown was an 18-yard reception by Anthony Waters.

On the ground, the Wolverines leaned on a committee of senior backs including Gill, Brayden Anderson, Mykel Ratliff and Caiden Wobeter.

The leading rusher was Ratliff, who had 50 yards. Gill and Anderson meanwhile each totaled close to 45 yards and a touchdown.

Wobeter finished with 15 yards but also chipped a pair of two-point conversions.

GMG will play host to ninth-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck this Friday and will head to Don Bosco the following week.
