The GC/G-R girls soccer team hosted Union on April 29 for a conference matchup with the Knights.

The Rebels were looking break a pesky losing streak that went back three games into mid-April.

Through both halves of the match, the Rebels (3-6) and the Knights (2-5) were evenly matched, despite a Union taking nearly twice as many shots on goal. GC/G-R opened the scoring with a goal by Jada Blohm midway through the first period.

Then soon before halftime, Union’s Jaiden Bush punched in a short-range goal to even the score. The teams remained scoreless in the second half with both offenses having an opportunity for penalty kicks that missed the mark.

The Rebels closed things early in overtime with a walk-off goal from freshman Dylinn Blohm in the opening 90 seconds of play.

Junior Reece Gordon led her team in shots with five and tallied the only Rebels assist. Senior Jacque Kuester was next with four shots on goal while freshman Dylinn Blohm and Jada Blohm both had two shots on goal and Mahayla Olson had one.

Senior keeper Makenzie Martens was busy at the net, recording 15 saves.

Through the first half of the season Olson has led the team in goals with a total of five. Kuester leads in assists with six.

Saturday the team will travel to Vinton for a tournament where they will face the Vikettes and the Anamosa Blue Raiders. The Rebels will enjoy a string of home matches as the season winds down before their regular season finale at Aplington-Parkersburg on May 20.
