Rebels hand Go-Hawks first shutout “L”
WAVERLY – Senior goalkeeper Josh Cooley shined in net and the Class 1A No. 4 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team blanked 2A No. 3 Waverly-Shell Rock 1-0 here Thursday night.
Cooley recorded five saves, two of the spectacular variety according to Rebels assistant coach Jon Dinsdale, and Erik Knaack’s goal midway through the second half lifted GC/G-R (7-1) to its third-straight win.
Knaack scored on a header, doing just enough with the contact to redirect Colton Dinsdale’s free kick from midfield for the match’s only goal. It was Knaack’s team-leading 10th goal of the season.
The shutout loss was the first scoreless outing for Waverly-Shell Rock (6-2), which had won six in a row after a season-opening loss to Cedar Falls.
Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Denver.
