No. 6 Spartans stun top ranked Lynx, A-P

GRUNDY CENTER – It was the definition of a team win for the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ golf team.

The Spartans, ranked sixth in Class 2A by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association, defeated a pair of top-ranked teams in a home quadrangular Monday at Town & Country Golf Club, using the sixth-score tiebreaker to hand Webster City its first dual loss in two years.

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck and 3A’s top-ranked Lynx tied atop the meet with a 158 team score. The fifth players for both teams each shot 42, but GC/G-R’s sixth score was lower than Webster City’s. Class 2A No. 1 Aplington-Parkersburg settled for third with a 165 total, and Iowa Falls-Alden (182) closed out the field.

Three Spartans – Cam Murphy, Austin Burroughs and Jake Bangasser – each shot rounds of 3-over-par 39, and Jared Freeman’s 41 was the fourth counting score. As it turned out, Jesper Holke-Farnam’s 42 and Matt Roeding’s 44 mattered just as much as the rest.

Webster City’s Nathan Ferrell finished with the day’s low round, shooting a 2-over 38, and Connor Shannon won a five-man playoff for the runner-up medal with a 39.
