Janesville ruins Rebels’ winning streak
JANESVILLE – The Class 1A No. 1 Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team suffered its first loss in more than a year, succumbing to Janesville 81-75 in Monday’s non-conference contest.
The Rebels, who went 28-0 in their run to last year’s 1A state championship, last tasted defeat on March 3, 2014, in a 57-52 substate final against Belmond-Klemme in Hampton.
This year’s edition had won five straight prior to Monday’s setback.
Joe Smoldt led Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-1) with 28 points, eight assists and three steals. He made six 3-pointers for the game.
Tyler Eiffler finished with 15 points and Tyler Pierce contributed 12 points for the Rebels, who were playing their third straight road game after three at home to start the season.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck is back at home on Jan. 5, 2016, hosting Union Community in a cross-NICL showdown. Janesville visits GMG tonight for an Iowa Star Conference clash.
